Why is an attorney helpful during a divorce?

Filing for a divorce isn't necessarily easy, but if you work with your attorney, you can keep your documents in order and make sure the divorce is moving as swiftly as possible. Divorces can be emotionally trying, but with the right support, you can be sure you fight for what's rightfully yours following your marriage.

The Georgia state government suggests using an attorney for your case to help move your divorce along more efficiently. If you try to do it alone, you could find that you've missed deadlines or failed to file fees on time.

Your attorney can also help you start a monthly budget, which you can use to show the court how much money you spend each month on groceries, child care, utilities, and other necessities. If you come up with a strong budget to show to the court, it will work in your favor when you ask for spousal support or a payout of a certain amount of money.

Working with your attorney can help you get a divorce quickly by preventing too many delays from the other party. Instead of making you call and request information, your attorney will be responsible for getting information from the other attorney and even potentially resolving disputes or negotiations. If you and your spouse can come to an agreement over your divorce terms, your divorce can be over as soon as a month, while divorces in contention can carry on for years. It's best to work through your negotiations swiftly, so you don't have to waste your time, money and energy on a drawn-out legal battle.
