Children mean divorce isn't really the end

If you are nearing a divorce in Georgia, you are thinking of it as the end of your relationship -- perhaps the end of one of the biggest things that defines what your life is like. It all feels very final. You'll especially feel like this when the case is over and you are officially apart.

However, if you have children, the reality is that your divorce isn't really the end. You're more than likely going to have a relationship with the other parent for the rest of your life.

Children just bring you and your ex back together over and over again. This starts if you have a co-parenting plan, so you both have to provide care and share the rights to raise the child. You may see your ex every week as the child moves from one home to the other.

Any big decisions may also bring you together. If you and your ex both have the right to decide on medical care, any medical situation means at least talking about what should be done.

Another important factor is that you'll both probably be around for big life events. If your daughter graduates from high school or college, you may both be at the ceremony or the party that follows. If your son gets married, you'll be there as well. You don't want to miss these things, but you must remember that having a child together means seeing your ex repeatedly.

As you and your spouse hash out the details of the parenting plan and everything else, be sure you know what legal rights you have.
