New study promotes shared child custody arrangements

When Georgia parents decide to separate, the process the process can be very stressful to their children. The proper custody arrangement, however, can alleviate much of this stress.

The popular belief used to be that the best child custody arrangement was for a child to live most of the time with one parent with the other parent having visitation rights. This way the child would have stability in their life and not be subject to the stress created when they moved between parents. They would sleep in the same bed most of the nights, and they would have a routine to follow on a daily basis.

A new study, however, debunks that theory. Just published in the "Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health," the study concentrated on 150,000 sixth and ninth grade students who lived in Sweden. It found that children who moved between both parents' households had fewer adjustment problems than those who lived exclusively with one parent, though they did have more problems than kids from intact families. Shared parenting gives kids better access to the social circles and resources of both parents. Children constantly moving between parents can be stressful, the study notes, but it is less stressful than the child losing substantial contact with one parent.

Divorcing couples have many legal issues to hash out, especially when children are involved. They naturally want the best custody arrangement for their children, whether it is sole or joint custody. When parents cannot agree amicably on a custody arrangement, they may each need the assistance of a family law attorney to help them over the hurdles.
