Family pets and the divorce process

Georgia couples going through a divorce may want to remember that custody issues can turn ugly, but not just those involving children. In a departure from the traditional question of who gets the kids, some couples battle in divorce court over who gets the family pets. Sometimes a couple involved in a divorce will fight over purebred dogs or cats. Others may squabble over custody of their beloved pets because they consider them four-legged children.

Fathers' rights law firms thriving across U.S.

In Georgia and around the country, more and more family law firms are focusing on fathers' rights. This is due to men who are seeking more of a say in the raising of their children as well as to many state legislatures that are reassessing their child custody laws. Articles about research that shows that the absence of a father in the home has vast repercussions have made their way onto the front pages of national media outlets.

Tony and Heather Podesta announce divorce settlement

Georgia residents may have read reports of the contentious divorce dispute brewing between the powerful Washington, D.C., lobbyists Tony and Heather Podesta. The couple's separation seemed amicable when it was announced in January 2013, but a bitter squabble over property division seemed ready to erupt after he filed for divorce in April 2014. However, the couple announced on June 9 that they have settled their differences.

State-wide programs target delinquent child support payments

According to a recent report, about 40 percent of noncustodial parents in Georgia who are ordered to provide financial support to a child fail to make payments. However, many of those parents were given the opportunity to avoid penalization for missing a payment during settlement week, an amnesty program which began May 19 and ended May 23. The program aimed to incentivize the fulfillment of support obligations, and 9,000 noncustodial parents were invited to participate.
