Georgia man assaults wife over divorce threat

A man in Georgia is accused of having assaulting his wife after she informed him that she wanted a divorce. On Dec. 18, a woman called in a domestic violence complaint after her husband allegedly threw her to the ground, held her down and threatened to burn her with cigarettes when she begged him to let her go.

The 30-year-old man is also said to have poured soda on his wife's head following the divorce request. The victim said that her husband sat on top of her and prevented her from getting up after she told him that she was ending the marriage. Once her husband finally allowed her to get up, the woman claims that her husband threw her back down to the ground again.

The woman was eventually able to escape the scene where the domestic violence occurred and run to a neighbor's for help. The accused man was arrested and faces charges of false imprisonment, simple assault and simple battery. During a hearing on Dec. 20, the woman told the court that this was not the first incidence of domestic violence. She described other encounters, including one in which her husband allegedly threw her into the back of his car and trapped her inside by turning on the child locks. The judge set the man's bail at $27,000.

A victim of domestic violence may wish to enlist the help of a family law attorney to obtain a restraining order against an abusive spouse or former spouse. The attorney may be able to help prepare a declaration to present to the court describing the reasons why a protective order may be necessary.
