Michael Jordan awarded attorney's fees in paternity case

A judge has ordered a 30-year-old Georgia resident to pay Michael Jordan's legal fees arising out of a paternity case. According to Jordan's attorney, those bills came to just over $6,500.

In August 2013, the woman filed a paternity suit against Jordan, in which she alleged that he was the father of her three-year-old child. However, a previous paternity test already completed on the child concluded that another man was the father. Her lawsuit was dismissed early in November. The woman insisted that Jordan had used the other man's name as an alias.

This is the second time in 2013 that a judge has ordered a woman to pay Jordan's legal fees due to a paternity suit. Earlier this year, a woman filed a suit that claimed Jordan fathered her teenage son, and he owed child support. The woman later dismissed the suit voluntarily; however, Jordan then sued for his legal fees in that case. He won, receiving a judgment of approximately $9,700.

The law requires that all parents take responsibility for their children by paying child support, regardless of whether they wish for child custody or visitation. However, when a person files a groundless lawsuit against someone, that person could be penalized by having to pay the other party's court and attorney fees. In the November case, the woman was not represented by an attorney, who may have been able to prevent her penalty by advising her of the circumstances surrounding her case.

A local family law attorney may be able to help any man alleged to be the father of a child to seek a paternity test. If the man is that father, an attorney may be able to help negotiate a parenting plan, including visitation and child support.
