Divorce filings increase at the beginning of the year

As discussed late last month, some couples in Gwinnett County and beyond who are struggling in their marriage may hold off on filing for divorce until after the holidays. Not surprisingly, there is typically a spike in the number of divorce filings at the beginning of the new year.

Some people may have been thinking about filing for divorce for quite some time. However, for others, a tumultuous time over the holidays may have pushed them into considering divorce as an option.

When couples make the decision to get married, they rarely expect that they will one day divorce. However, after some time, couples may realize that they have grown apart and want different things in life. Making the decision to pursue a divorce is not an easy one to make. For some, though, it is the best solution.

There are a variety of matters that must be resolved during the divorce process. Couples must divide property. While some would think that property can be divided equally between spouses, that may not always be the case.

Parents with children must also settle child custody and child support matters, issues that can often become heated and emotional.

While a divorce can present a variety of challenges, people should be reassured to know that there are people to turn to for help. An experienced family law attorney can help couples find solutions in a timely matter. The hope is that couples can settle their differences and begin moving on with their new life.
