Failure to pay child support lands man in trouble with the law

Child support is just one of many issues parents must settle after they file for divorce. Child support payments are important. When a parent fails to pay child support in a timely manner, a child is often the one that suffers the most.

Gwinnett County readers may be shocked to learn that authorities have arrested a man in another state for allegedly failing to pay more than $1 million in child support. Authorities believe the man was living in Thailand. However, he was arrested in the Philippines and deported back to the United States.

The man has reportedly failed to pay child support for more than 10 years. He has three children from two separate marriages. He was apparently one of the federal government's most wanted for failure to pay child support.

People may think that child support is a simple matter to settle. However, there may be many considerations when determining what is fair for everyone involved.

People should also know that child support can be changed even after a divorce has been finalized. A loss of job, for instance, may make it particularly difficult for one parent to continue making the previously agreed upon payments. In those situations, a modification may be granted.

As this recent story shows, failing to pay child support can lead to criminal charges. Rather than having to face criminal penalties, people would be wise to seek a modification. Those hoping to modify their payments would likely benefit from speaking with an experienced family law attorney.
