Pacers' Paul George petitions for sole custody of baby

Sports fans in Georgia may be interested to learn about a child custody dispute involving Indiana Pacers' Paul George. According to court documents, George is seeking sole custody of a 2-month-old pending the results of a paternity test. In February, he publicly stated that if a test proves he is the father of a New York woman's child, he would embrace it.

Previously, the baby's mother cited George's busy traveling schedule as the reason she filed for sole custody. In the petition filed by George, the mother's ability to provide for her child is questioned. The petition states that the mother is unemployed and dependent on others to help her raise the child and that he is the best parent to provide day-to-day care for the child.

Since the baby girl's birth, her mother has been caring for her while living in Queens with family. The mother's lawyer told a media source that his client is currently not seeking employment because she is caring for an infant and that George's petition is grossly insulting to women. George's spokesman commented that observers of the routine paternity case might find it unusual that a famous athlete was so willing to accept the responsibility of fatherhood.

A case in which both parents are seeking sole custody of a child may become especially emotional. A parent in this situation may want the assistance of an experienced attorney to guide them through legal proceedings. In some cases, an attorney may be able to help the parent work out a joint custody agreement that takes both parents' schedules and financial resources into account.
